Error with accented characters

Hi,

I'm a brazilian user (sorry for the poor english), and i'm experiencing problems with the accented characters (for example, ã, é, etc). Every time I paste one of them in the editor, the character is replaced by "\Uffffffffffffff".

My S.O. is Slackware 12.1, the codification I use is iso-8859-1.
